In the 50s, in the "deep south", many people might not have only thought that you had a natural right of freedom of association, but also that expressing this right in a racist way is a good thing. That belief had a number of unfortunate results. One of them is that black people where excluded and discriminated against. Another was the support for the very idea of freedom of association was weakened. Both of these things are very bad results. it's NATURAL TO BAN BLACK AND BROWN PEOPLE FROM YOUR ESTABLISHMENT!? I said no such thing. I'm not sure the concept of "natural" even applies to such an idea, although "natural" is a rather broad idea, so in certain ways it probably would apply. In any case it wasn't the idea I was talking about. What I said was that it was obnoxious to do so, but that people have a natural right to do so. Or to put it another way, in most contexts it is unjust for government to force you to associate with other people that you don't want to associate with, and that it remains unjust even if you are a racist jerk.
