Webster, I will reiterate...............
I can make a call with MS Netmeeting, CoolTalk, or Vocaltec's Iphone without connectiong to any server.
With Iphone, I can direct the program to not open the directory, therefor not logging in to the online directroy server at all (ok.. this bypasses your IRC server completley). From that point I have two options. I can either input an IP address and make a call directly to another PC, or I can use a method in which I enter a unique Iphone ID. An addressing aserver is queried (but never connected to or logged in to) for the parties current Ip address and a direct connection PC to PC is made (now as you should know as a network guy, packet switching using IP is considered a connectionless protocol, so there is really not a direct connection per se, as there would be in a circuit switched network). This latter is the same method that Digiphone uses... but keeps as a dark secret.
None of the applications uses an intermediary server to complete a voice connection. Packets always go Ip address to IP address, machine to machine, or as you would say PC to PC.
Not only have I tried 35 of the apps, I am a closed beta tester for about 6 of the companies producing net phones. I know my facts, you on the other hand seem to be relying on Camelot hype for your interpretation of reality. Judging by their track record, this is not a very good source of technical data...
BTW you never mentioned how you think interoperability of H.323 compliant applications is going to be achieved. Well the simple answer is that all they need is to share codecs... since the routing does not depend upon any special intermediary ...
I urge you again, please do some research before you make rash statements that are blatently false. This behavior really doesn't do much for your credibility at all ! |
