When the US recording industry was in its heyday, I would say in the 60s and 70s, artists had control, AND got rich. Once that ended, the music industry fell off in terms of new talent.

Unfortunately, it's always been like this. Remember, Clarkson would be nowhere without AI and the RCA contract. Most artists don't make money until their second contract. If they last that long. At least with RCA, they are big enough that she gets an honest count. But by the time they take off "expenses," she is still in the hole.
