I make intermittent efforts to restore order to my collection. There is a rough division into categories: classical, ECM jazz, other jazz, blues, rock, Latin, and stuff that doesn't fit anywhere (e.g. African, Indian, humour etc.) and in principle it's alphabetic order within each. In practice a big pile of played records builds up, and every few months I put them all back where they belong.
I find I go through spells (fits?) of listening to one kind of music or another, and also periods when I don't want to hear anything. Of course there are records that I'll never listen to again, and someday I'll have to cull.
I'm afraid the CD collection is growing too, but rather slowly. My daughter gave me Amy Winehouse's lately - that's quite tasty. She reminds me of Helen Shapiro, but not many others seem to see the similarity. I'm talking about her voice, not her style (Shapiro wasn't a piss-head).
P.S. I made a little box (just a clean RIAA pre-amp running off batteries) for capturing vinyl albums onto the computer, to port them to CD (or DVD), but it takes a long time (real time) and the result isn't really satisfactory, because of all the hiss and snap crackle and pop. I have software to clean it up, but it still requires some setting of parameter levels and so on. So I haven't got around to doing the bulk conversion yet. |
