Augustus, look at Abu Graib. Now that kind of evil behavior is very atypical in the US military. We all know that the vast majority of our troops are decent individuals, or at least that they are not evil and sadistic. But there is always a certain percentage who are, and if those few radical rightwingers were given encouragement by the establishment they might just have carried out any number of murderous illegal acts.

Look back at Vietnam. The rightwing vets hate to admit this, but the CIA ran a black ops program called Phoenix which was an assassination and terrorism campaign. Guys like John Kerry were the taxi drivers, like APOCALYPSE NOW, up the rivers into Cambodia or behind enemy lines. Hardcore SPecOps types would then infiltrate and kill with extreme prejudice. Beheading was their favorite manner of assassination as in the Buddhist religion a headless body cannot go to Nirvana after dead.

Now do Arab extremists murder and behead? Sure. They're rats and they need to be killed. But was Nick Berg beheaded by Zarqawi? I wouldn't bet on it. Zarqawi may have murdered hundreds of others, but I have serious doubts Berg was his victim. Especially since Berg was a pacifist liberal kid who opposed the war. Who hates someone like that most of all? The same extremists who were behind the lies against John Kerry in 2004, the mega-hawkish far rightwing.
