I agree with you on the need to eliminate pain, and I agree that sometimes helping things along should be an option. But
' My father in terminal cancer ripped out his iv dozens of times.' says a lot. Unless the IV's were for pain meds there was little reason to have them, particularly since your father didn't want them. (a circuitous situation unfortunately)

I just think Kavorkian is misguided. I just don't believe many of the people he helped to go needed to go at that moment. The Oregan law and its repercussions prove much of that. In general people want to live if they can do so without suffering, even if it only means a few more days of life. Last visits, a last sunrise, that final matter of business. Lots of reasons to stick around if it isn't hell to do so.

As I have stated a lot of this discussion is unecessary if you have money. Mostly the informed rich die medicated and when they want to. Nothing complicated about that.

I regard Hospice care as an alternative to today's insane hospital care of the terminally ill. And I think Hospice care should be regarded as a methodology that deals with the patient and the family. Important for all to understand the process.

In 10-25 years the beds will be overflowing, the dimentia cases will have sky rocketed and we will not know what do do with all the worn out boomers and ex hippies. It is going to be real mess. A hell of lot of people are going to die in a dirty diaper and with a few bed sores, and in pain-- not to mention some bad ass cancer, heart, or lung problem. It is going to be a terrible time to leave as the lines will worse than at a superbowl head.

But..that doesn't mean Kavorkian style death on demand is a viable alternative.
