Similar approaches to harnessing vibrations for the purpose of generating electricity were presented recently in the daily MIT Technology Review newsletters I sometimes post here, only, these were nano-scale in nature. I may have posted one or more of them, but I'm not sure. In any event:

Nanogenerator Fueled by Vibrations
By Prachi Patel-Predd, 4/5/2007
An array of zinc-oxide nanowires that generates current when vibrated with ultrasonic waves could provide a new way to power biological sensors and nanodevices.

A Nano Pressure Sensor
By Prachi Patel-Predd, 3/6/2007
Zinc-oxide nanowires that respond electrically when bent could be used to measure minute forces and pressures.
