I was kind of concerned that when I talked with them they'd get mad at each other because they wouldn't like what I was telling them. So plan b (if they got mad with each other) was to say something that would make them angry with me so they'd focus on my rather than each other. It's really a drag to have to think about employing a psych 101 tactic on your parents.
