<< Either way, wouldn't Chairman Lee and company at GTE take over --
given the leadership void at AT&T? Don't you think the deal would
resolve AT&T's management problem? They'd have one terrific company
with great potential and strong leadership -- finally.>>

With AT&T's traditional and well known BUREAUCRACY, it won't
work. Unless Lee gets the chairmanship of the combined company, the
merger will not work because the old AT&T BUREAUCRATS, MILKERS,
AND POLITICIANS
will take over and build a bigger FALLING
FAT GIANT
that will be eaten alive 5 years down the road by the
other much more efficient and aggressive telcom. companies i.e. SBC,
WorldCom...etc.

I am not suggesting that Lee is the best choice. But his recent
initiatives in LD, BBN, internet, shutdown of FAT HQ in Stamford and
other cost management did demonstrate some good visions. If AT&T just
puts Zeglis at the top, nothing against him personally, the old
BUREAUCRACY is still going to consume and drag him down. And
AT&T will miss the window of opportunity to reshape the combined
company in the current ever faster changing telecom. environment.
