Dutch, like English, derived from Plattdeutsch. What we now call German is Hochdeutsch. There are a lot of similarities between them, but there are important differences, too. Note the 'wuh' sound for 'w', unlike Hochdeutsch which uses a 'vuh' sound.

And Plattdeutsch is Northern Germany. You know, where it is flat.

And there is nothing wrong with a teacher illustrating a reasoning process. Teaching reasoning is much more important than just teaching facts. Now granted, his speculation was not correct, but he did clearly indicate what was speculation and what was factual.
