"a) Public restrooms are not that great (and I gotta pay to use most of them?)"

Yeah, they are pretty bad.

"b) Quality of hotels are not at the level I'm used to in America, dollar for dollar (or euro for euro)."

For travelers in Europe, there are more than hotels to stay in. Bed and breakfasts are much more common, and usually very nice for the money. In Germany, at least, there are often little stands outside of towns listing available places with prices and phone numbers. So we would drive to our destination and hunt one up.

"c) Cars are smaller (but at least they're bigger than those in France and Italy)."

And the price of gas is a lot higher. So fuel economy is a lot more important. The cars aren't smaller because they can't afford better, just look at the price tags. The cars are usually a lot better equipped than American cars, stuffed with all kinds of gadgets.

"d) Streets are narrower, even in the farmlands and villages."

Well, yeah. Driving through the country is a scenic joy because of it.

Tastes differ, I guess.

"e) Grocery stores and "Wal-marts" not as nice."

I guess that depends on where you go. I think MediaMarkt and Saturn beats Best Buy all hollow. Huge selections on everything. And there are Walmart equivalents that sell everything from pastries to cars.
