Don't know if you still follow CALM
Yes...I do, and I still own shares in CALM.
CALM at one time did very well because of the Atkins Diet, and the high protein craze. (Maybe because of a small float, and large short interest too?) CALM eventually was on the Regulation SHO list for quite a few months.
CALM again seemed to gain attention during the bird flu mania period. At that time one financial writer suggested CALM as part of his "bird flu" portfolio. He later took CALM off of his list. I emailed the author and asked why he had put CALM on the list. He replied that it was due to the fact that eggs would be needed for the bird flu vaccine. His facts weren't correct on how eggs were used in a vaccine, so his rational never made sense to me. However, CALM did make sense to me if there ever was a bird flu epidemic because those who raise chickens for their eggs IMO wouldn't want to take the risk and the responsibility for their chickens. Consumers would still need eggs for cooking, and protein, but they would want eggs that were certified and gathered under strict regulations for consumer safety.
Designer type of eggs are becoming a larger part of the CALM products. From the CALM website "Specialty shell eggs include reduced cholesterol, cage free and organic eggs and are a rapidly growing segment of the market." These eggs have a higher profit margin than other eggs, and in the Bay Area they seem to be in high demand. (nothing like a free range, organic, high omega egg...especially for those who live in Berkeley!) |
