Carter is a great honest man, a fine American and a truly fine Christian. His presidency was damaged because of four things beyond his control and not his fault:

- The huge national debt incurred by Vietnam, which we will again experience after Bush's trillion dollar disaster in Iraq
- The fall of the Shah
- The sandstorm that doomed his rescue mission
- OPEC standing up to oil companies and Israel

However, Carter did three truly great things

- first real diplomacy with the Soviet Union
- Camp David Peace accords
- HUge new solar clean energy and efficiency program which sadly Reagan demolished or we'd be 100% off Arab oil today

Sometimes a president needs to get lucky. Like GW Bush got lucky that his dereliction of duty allowed 9-11 to happen then he could exploit it to grab total power for a few years and abuse it badly.
