The CPU in a personal computer uses a lot of watts,
something on the order of 50-100W, even when it is
idle. So what you have to do, is actually put the PC
into standby mode: That will take the monitor, hard
drives, and CPU and put them into a low-power state.

I started doing this recently. When the hard drive
parks it is a little disconcerting, but I noticed
my room was heating up even when I wasn't using
the PC actively. I have a pentium D and they suck
power apparently.

Sounds like a great idea.

That said, I don't want to be accused of being
a hypocrite. For safety, my wife drives an SUV,
which I think keeps my daughters safer than driving
a small vehicle on the Interstate. Our Interstates
are absolutely clogged with big trucks, buses, semis
etc. I wouldn't want my kids driven around in a golf
cart, that is for damn sure.
