The people I live around all drive large vehicles too, it is the suburban way. Sometimes I drop my kid off at school with my Taurus, and I am surrounded by Expeditions and Navigators. Anyway, it is a moot point. I cannot tell you what to drive, and you cannot tell me what my wife should drive. Double the price of gas with carbon taxes, and she may yet get that mini cooper that she pines for. I will tell you this however--I have a handful of coworkers who live in the city and take the bus or ride bikes to work. Now that is the way to go. I totally envy them. Except that none of them is married or has kids, and they live in 500 square foot apartments and such. Well, maybe I don't envy them. But they are cooler than me.
