re: I don't understand the point you are trying to make by "...and are built into their gross margin." Sure, companies will pass taxes along to their customers whenever they can. But that's hardly a decent argument in support of the taxes. It means the consumer takes a hit.

After you pointed out that taxes were higher than subsidies for the oil companies, I just wanted to point out that they are not suffering. They just pass the cost along.

But just less than enough to meet demand, so that we get these price spikes. Don't you think that is a bit strange... it's not like they don't have the money.

No, to the casual observer it might appear that they are colluding to keep the price high by limiting capacity. But we both know that they would NEVER do that! That would mean that in this case, the capitalist ethics seems to be working against the public interest, not for it. A failure so to speak.
