HBO: Oswald Worked Alone
LIBERTAS

It's been interesting to watch how Oliver Stone's JFK kind of worked against him. While it stoked renewed interest in the Kennedy assassination, that interest has pretty much led everyone to believe there was no conspiracy. Personally I think the movie JFK is 20 pounds of manure stuffed in a ten pound bag, but also a masterpiece and one of the best films of the 1990's.

I've read a couple conspiracy books, and while compelling they also live and breathe in the air of speculation. After reading Gerald Posner's Case Closed my conspiracy days were over. That book was too well researched and detailed for any intellectually honest person to believe anything other than Oswald was in fact the lone gunman.

A big attraction to the conspiracy mongers on the left is that they don't want to believe a Communist killed Kennedy. To have to wrap one's mind around such a thing requires you to look at motive: Why would a Commie-sympathizer kill Kennedy? Could it be because Kennedy was anti-Communist?

Liberals loath remembering that Kennedy was a fervent anti-Communist. But he was. Kennedy was the guy who tried to invade Cuba for crying out loud. Yes, take out Uncle National Healthcare. Kennedy was the guy who got us into Vietnam to stop Communism from spreading in Southeast Asia. The left doesn't want to be reminded that their cherished martyr was much closer to Reagan in ideology (Kennedy also lowered taxes across the board and increased military spending) than John F'n Kerry.

The Vietnam War is the left's Holy Grail of hate-justification for America. It defines who they are. It's their theology and rallying point. But John F. Kennedy is also their Prince. So, to justify both a wild-eyed conspiracy must be created whereas Oswald was in fact an anti-Communist used by the military industrial complex to assassinate Kennedy because Kennedy was going to pull our forces out of Vietnam.

One of the reasons I'm no longer a liberal is because it was too much work to keep it all straight.

The final nail in the JFK conspiracy coffin may be this new HBO mini-series Tom Hanks is producing:

"HBO is near a deal with Playtone that will turn Vincent Bugliosi's 1,632-page book "Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy" into a miniseries.

Ten-parter will debunk long-held conspiracy theories and establish that assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. …

"I totally believed there was a conspiracy, but after you read the book, you are almost embarrassed that you ever believed it," [Producer Gar] Goetzman said. "To think that guys who grew up in the '60s would make a miniseries supporting the idea that Oswald acted alone is something I certainly wouldn't have predicted. But time and evidence can change the way we view things."

I haven't read Bugliosi's book (He's also the guy who prosecuted Charles Manson and wrote Helter Skelter) but can tell you that Oswald's story is a fascinating one; his defection to Russia, his return, his desperation to be an important man… Oswald was a man cursed with just enough intelligence to be frustrated by his own limitations. He's a very compelling character which should make for an equally compelling story.
