US president George Bush has fallen ill at the G8 summit in Germany, reports suggest.

Mr Bush was said to be suffering from stomach pains overnight and is now set to miss some of the discussions scheduled between leaders about Africa today.

The BBC reports that the US president fell ill last night and showed TV footage of him drinking a non-alcoholic beer with fellow leaders including British prime minister Tony Blair and German chancellor Angela Merkel.

US officials are reporting that Mr Bush will still take part in some of the events planned for the final full day of meetings at the German seaside resort of Heiligendamm.

Mr Bush is scheduled to meet new French president Nicolas Sarkozy for the first time since he was elected to succeed Jacques Chirac last month.

Mr Chirac and Mr Bush did not always enjoy friendly relations and Mr Sarkozy is tipped by political analysts to be a more malleable ally to the US leader.

Under the Chirac government France was often at loggerheads with the US over international issues, not least the war in Iraq.

But with Mr Sarkozy now in charge it is believed the two countries will be able to reach agreement more often.

Mr Bush is due to meet Mr Sarkozy on the fringes of today's summit discussions, which are due to focus on global aid to Africa.

The US president is due to visit Poland and Italy on his way back to America after the summit.End of story
