I thought it was abolished, and it was, but it was restored as a Naval ensign in 1954.

It wasn't just an ensign in WWII, it was the Japanese military flag, apparently it was used by ground units as well. Currently the ground self defense forces use a flag with rays coming out of it, but it looks different than the old WWII military flag.
