I doubt seriously if you can find many people who deep down believe that slavery was good for the country.

That is a different issue. Given the ties that the Klan has with the flag, that is something that shouldn't be in dispute.

However, that isn't all, or even most. The flag has become a potent symbol over the years, for good or ill.

You cannot effectively suppress potent symbols. You only give them power by trying. The best is to just ignore it. A lot of the things it symbolizes to blacks can't happen any more. Well, some can, but it no longer gets tacit approval from local or state governments. So there is no reason to fear it any more.
