Children lie constantly. If you've been around many of them, some of them tell whoppers ALL the time. Some of it is the natural tendency of people to embellish their stories. All children (and all adults I've ever met) do this. I do not think I've ever met anyone who did not embellish stories- that's a form of lying. I guess you can say it confers a benefit in that it makes the story more interesting. But are people lying consciously for the benefit when they do this? I guess what I'm saying is, people lie so often I'm not sure that some of it isn't just generalized behavior- since most people so rarely tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Most of what we say is filtered and embellished.

I don't see how the lying problem has much to do with the other discussion. "seeking as much pleasure, property, power, and influence in the world as possible for the benefits those things offer in and of themselves." I don't think I've met many people who are not seeking those things in and of themselves. Remember that pleasure can be defined as pleasure one gets from the self satisfaction of being "good" however one defines it. Sanctimoniousness is a form of pleasure- and as such, both the hedonist and the ascetic are both seeking pleasure, they're just getting it in different ways.
