"In fact, the majority shares the perspective of conservatives against the deal. A late May New York Times poll asked: "Should illegal immigrants be prosecuted and deported for being in the U.S. illegally, or shouldn't they?" 69 percent said they should be prosecuted, 24 percent said they should not."

Newsbusters is cherry-picking. In that SAME CBS/NY Times poll, 62% said illegals who had been here more than two years should be allowed to keep their jobs and apply for permanent residence and 67% said we should allow those "who came into the country before January to apply for a four-year visa that could be renewed, as long as they pay a $5,000 fine, a fee, show a clean work record and pass a criminal background check."

BTW, Charlie and George are right to "rue the demise of the bill", if they really did that. If the bill is really dead, the Dems will blame it on Bush and GOP members of congress and use it as a campaign issue to increase control of congress and perhaps win the White House. That is precisely their strategy.
