BRCM adding to it's wireless patent portfolio: AP Broadcom to Buy Global Locate for $146M Tuesday June 12, 9:02 am ET Broadcom to Purchase GPS Chip and Software Maker Global Locate for $146 Million NEW YORK (AP) -- Chip maker Broadcom Corp. said Tuesday it agreed to buy privately-held GPS chip and software maker Global Locate Inc. for about $146 million in cash. Broadcom said both companies' boards have approved the purchase. Broadcom expects the deal will close in the third quarter. The Irvine, Calif.-based company also said that it may pay up to an additional $80 million in cash to Global Locate's former capital stock holders, based on various performance goals. Broadcom said buying San Jose, Calif.-based Global Locate adds more than 175 issued and pending U.S. and foreign patents to its patent portfolio. The deal will also let the company come up with new standalone GPS chips and GPS chips that include other wireless standards, Broadcom said, which can be put into consumer electronics like cell phones and personal navigation devices.
