There were/are killer amendments from both sides, though I suspect slightly more form the far right. Exactly what these amendments are, however, gets only vague mention. One from the right that was voted down already (including by most Republicans, I think) was described as eliminating the temporary legal status that is at the core of this compromise, effectively gutting it. From the left, there have been attempts to cut out the future temporary worker program and weaken other provisions the GOP negotiators had demanded. The reality, though, is that none of these killer amendments would have passed and Harry Reid knows that. He doesn't want to let the GOP minority, and particularly the President, to look like they can accomplish anything important. He's playing blatantly partisan, election-posturing games and because so many on the right are cheering the apparent demise of this bill, his ploy may well succeed.
