Because, even if the voters are anti-GOP, the are more anti-Hillary -- a candidate only the party faithful dems can love. That sums it up exactly; if the Dems nominate someone with such high negatives that she would be lucky to get over 50% of the popular vote, then they could be throwing away a great opportunity. They are very good at that.
