EE Times just had a Chinese digital cable TV analysis(estimated 25 million subscribers this year). While the government is promoting digital TV, and the numbers are impressive; it is still Mpeg2 on broadcasting material. The set-top boxes(STB) is not yet good at Mpeg4/h.264. This is interesting; because they refused to pay Mpeg LA(licensing Agency) royalty for the Mpeg2 STB($2.50 each).

This is obvious that the Mpeg4/h.264 does not have the latest codecs? When some one refuses to pay for royalty, they don't get the codecs they can use. So, some US customers of Chinese STB had set backs from royalty and licensing problems. I suggest, these Chinese customers in America apply with Mpeg LA and get the codecs they can use. Obviously, they also have to work with Mpeg4/h.264 encoders for proper compliance requirement.

The Chinese was so smart that they want to switch over to AVC codecs instead of Mpeg4/h.264. But Seachange does not have their AVC codecs work too well, either. It takes a lot more than one organization to get the codecs working. It takes encoder people to work with decoder people to get it right?

DirecTv and Dish may have better luck? Yahoo and Microsoft may have better luck for Verizon?
