re: Multi thousand dollar subsidies or penalties for the majority of car purchases in the US, would be larger then the total gross subsidies the oil industry receives (much larger then the net), and also much larger then the subsidies received by other industries. It wouldn't be a pure subsidy, it would be close (+/-) to revenue neutral. And as a percentage of purchase price, it would be right there with taxes on cigarettes, liquor and other "sin taxes". It's not a massive new subsidy, it's a shifting of the burden. It's not much different than heavily sales taxing cigarettes so that you don't have to have a sales tax on food.
