If the net cost to the treasury is zero (or negative) then my point about it being a mistake to say the illegal immigrants are passing the cost to the taxpayers would be false (because their would be no cost to pass on).

If the net cost is positive (and I suspect at least in the short run it is, if perhaps not nearly as positive as some suggest) then my point applies exactly as I wrote it in the original post.

Either way, my point doesn't really say anything about how we should deal with immigration. Its rather about the inaccuracy of (and perhaps even the dangers of) saying that someone is imposing a cost on us, when its really the government imposing the cost
