Officially speaking, the sheriff has the mandate to operate the jail, not the judge, so the sheriff probably feels the need to defend his turf. However, that's not to say that the prosecution isn't within their purview to petition the judge to demand an explanation of the sheriff why the sentence as ordered was not carried out.

AFAIK the so-called 'medical condition' excuse for her temporary release last week was presented on a 'trust me on this one' basis without any documentation submitted to the court. So even if the judge actually had any sympathy for her, the sheriff put him in an untenable position where the judge would have appeared party to the BS if he complied with the request to let her out of jail -- so he didn't. Maybe he wouldn't have let her out anyways, but the judge had to pissed at the sheriff for the way it was set up.

As for hauling the sheriff back in front of the judge to explain himself, there's a process to be followed that allows time for preparation. The judge also needs to be careful about chomping too hard at the bait or he'll provide grounds for getting himself removed from the case for reasons of apparent bias.

Ahh, the games people play. This is why I work for myself now, I only have one asshole to deal with
