The consensus of the majority is always influenced by popular trends, creating a conventional wisdom of the day. Conventional wisdom is heavily impacted by the energy of fads, styles, and entertainment.

In the sixties we saw little grass cabanas in Central America where innocent and friendly peasants lived. Twenty years later we saw satalite installations by those villages and the kids coming out of the cabanas were gangsters in every sense of the word.

If you've seen the movie Blood Diamonds you may see the impact of Conventional Wisdom on that culture.

I consider the phenomenon just as problematic in my own culture but don't feel like arguing with defensive loyalists today.
