Verizon Fios system uses three wavelengths(1350, 1490 and 1550 um) in the IR(infrared spectrum) for their DWDM(Dense wavelength division multiplexer) transmission(cdma style). Or you could run three channels only, but with digital packet switching only(GSM or Wcdma style).

This opens up the argument and R&D of channels or data compression; getting the priority in the use of mixed analog and digital signals.

If all the mixed signal are used for digital signal channels,, then it is only '0's and '1's. If analog signals are transferred on each channel then you need DSP DAC circuits to do data compression with a library of repeated words represented by different amplitude of signals. You could even have PRML(peak related most likelihood) curves(periodic frequency) for data compression same as used in hdd(hard disk drives) data compression.

Footnote:
DWDM is sort of like color TV using three colors to get up to 36bits(2 to the power of 36) of colors. Each color can be distinguished and becomes a channel for communication in the fiber optics. But the color channels are like packet switching, assigned in cue(one packet after another).
