alan; Slash and burn is the old style natuve way to clear land for crops. They move on every year or two as the poor soil will only yield for a year or two(especially since they often triple crop it annually). The burns are done in the dry season as it will not burn well other times. For mining you do not really do it as you have equipment that the natives do not have and you can clear the patch you want, and not 300 acres.
