Re: 28 vs 56> With a 56 x2 modem (+ Pentium 166 & a 4mb video card)
I now whiz through the internet. I am now using two ISPs at the same time: Prodigy & AOL. Just joined AOL to check it now.

I usually access Prodigy at a 46.6 access baud rate using Netscape 3.
With AOL, I come in at a 45 something baud rate. But guess what guys, AOL using their network is about 50% faster than my perceived speed with Prodigy and I don't own any AOL stock. (Should have bought AOL when it was in the 30 dollar range, but I thought it was overpriced then).

Since I'm not having any problems accessing AOL's network, I going to dump Prodigy in two weeks and stay with AOL.

Hey guys, all I got to say is that once you experience this faster speed that I have been experiencing 56kb x2 service using AOL, there is no turning back.

It's the most cost-effective way to go. It's like when you were a kid and you got you rode your first bike after riding a tricyle!

My brother in the Phila. area has another good internet access deal for those who live on the internet 24 hours a day.

He paid $100 upfront to ATHM for a dedicated internet access line. He pays $40 a month for ATHM's service which, I believe, includes the ISP monthly charge. He also freed up his second telephone line by having a ATHM dedicated connection. His access speed is unbelievable fast since he is one of the few leading edge types on this service.

Long term ATHM's economic model may work if they can survive the huge losses, but the servive will significantly deteriorate or slow down as more folks use thier service. It will be interested to see in a couple of years which internet access mode survives and is profitable: the dialup "tortise" or the cable "hare".

Enough said! Rob
