Hard to tell since he substitutes snide evasiveness and personal insinuation for reasoned discourse. He probably considers it insulting for me to point that out, but I'm simply making an observation of fact.

In general fear is a precipitator of anger which can lead to violence if not expressed in an appropriate manner.

Causes of fear related to this topic are many.

One that he seems to be alluding to is the fear of oppression by people bent on proselytizing a religion that conflicts with some other value. I don't see where he is at any risk of that here but he may.

Fear of loss is a major motivator, causing people to strive in the world and, in some cases behave in extremes. There is a fundamental fear of loss, which people who don't believe in an afterlife are burdened with. The fear of losing all at death. It can be worse for some believers who know they are behaving badly.

And of course some people have a dreaded fear of the unknown, which can be so extreme that they just put a big X over topics like we are discussing; probably presuming there is nothing to fear if you don't look at, hear, and can't be touched by the subject. But your behavior starts to look odd when you are caught in the middle of a discussion like this one.
