Hi Bill.

Your reply highlights yet another aspect of privacy, but doesn't take into account what I was getting at. Of course MySpace and other social sites reveal a lot, it's a main part of their offerings to provide billboard services to their users. But I'm not referring to what is available to other users of the Web, but to the caretakers of the servers upon which the Web is built.

We tend to place an enormous amount of blind trust in application service providers when it comes to their custodial and protective roles of our personal information, is what I'm getting at. My rule of thumb is that, the cheaper a service is to use, to the point of it being available for 'free,' the more likely it is that not only is the service being used to exact fees through advertising, but intelligence gathering about users can also be found in their business plans --albeit, often unspoken or under NDA, as well.
