He notes it was Begin's policy. And it was widely assumed in Palestinian circles. It was center stage in the Palestinian's biography I just finished reading. Item after item; time after time; the Israeli authorities provided support to the religious ideologues among the Palestinians and arrested the moderates.

I disagree with this. Large numbers of Israelis have accepted the two state solution for a long time. And most of the political leaders have done so as well--including Ariel Sharon and Olmert, not to mention Peres, Rabin and Barak.

There is some distance between public statements and actions. Various Israeli governments have publicly opposed more settlements on the West Bank while secretly supporting them.

OK, fair enough in some ways. But he should go read Hamas's charter again before he says that Israel should negotiate with them without any preconditions.

He seems quite clear as to just what Hamas is. He, in fact, sees that as one of the principle problems.
