Environments recover. 50 years ago, the Manukau Harbour was fine and we would swim at Shelly Beach at Mangere Bridge, which was covered in cockle shells. It was full of fish.

It gradually died until 30 years ago there was little left alive. 20 years ago it was as dead. Not a worm, not a shell fish, not a crab, not a leaf. Nothing. Mangroves around the fringes.

It was poisoned by:

Lead from petrol running off roads
Oil from cars dripping onto roads and run off with stormwater
Oil from tyres [they have a lot of oil in the rubber]
General pouring of muck down stormwater drains
Pikes Point rubbish dump
Westfield abattoirs turning the harbour red with blood and stinking with offal
Pacific Steel and other industries pouring anything they liked out into the harbour [Stink Bridge was named correctly - leading to Otahuhu]
Mangere sewage treatment pouring megalitres in a river into the harbour.

Over the last 20 years, it has been coming back to life as those pollutants have been stopped. It is starting to really come back now. Give it another 10 years and it should be pretty good.

China, is still going backwards. It'll be a long time before they get cleaner rather than dirtier.

It isn't all that long ago that labour in the USA [especially for Negroes] was as bad as that for those few people in China. I imagine the stories are exaggerated to make a good story.

There are plenty of such situations in the seamy side of town in western countries too. When people live on the edge of society with little protection, bullying and violence are common. Russell Crowe and Naomi Campbell for example are not averse to a spot of assault if their wishes aren't met. Unfortunately for them, their victims were too public and were able to fight back. Not everyone is so fortunate.
