The US has both types of cattle raising. In the Far West, like Montana, Nevada, Wyoming, cattle are often in very large areas with little vegetation, and occasional helicopter herding.

In the South and on the East Coast States, there are many small farms with less than 20 head of cattle. About 12 years ago, I saw a Department of Agriculture statistic that said that about 1/4 of US beef production was from farms with under 10 cows.

The intense large scale ranching is found in Texas, Oklahoma, and California, and other places that have some rain.

I was in Reno, Nevada once, staying in a motel inside the city limit towards the airport. I was awakened in the morning by a loud cow outside my motel window. Damn cow woke me up.
