Tom,
Thanks for those afterthoughts. I'll be the first to declare that no one knows everything, much less I. In fact, I stated early on that I was looking forward to this discussion for its potential to be an edifying experience. We've not only all got a lot to learn about this subject as relates to its present art and interpretations of the law, but it's an area whose parameters keep changing all the time, as well, which makes it a doubly intractable challenge.
I've taken a laid back approach by some measures in responding to your points because I know that there are experts on the subjects of privacy and law enforcement guidelines on this board who could teach me more than just a few things in those areas, and I'm still hoping that they'll step forward and either dispute or reaffirm some of the statements we've both made up until now, and add whatever else they deem appropriate.
In the end, I don't purport to know a whole lot about everything, but fortunately I happen to know a whole lot of brilliant folks who, collectively, know a whole lot about their chosen areas of pursuit, and fortunately they most often are willing to share what they know here. And that has been the essence of this board as it's been conducted over the past half-dozen years or more, not I.
