I just can’t go back that far, but I’m not surprised. My elementary school had TVs in all the classrooms. We watched all the Mercury and Gemini launches and had a few tele-courses. One was Spanish, starting in the 3rd grade. Latino numbers were very insignificant then. It’s almost like another country now. On a personal basis, I don’t mind Hispanic people, but I don’t like how this area has been inundated with the Spanish language. I have no doubt that the transformation of the Southwest has been the combination of multiple factors, but it won’t be healthy for the US when most of the Southwest speaks predominately Spanish.
