Paul,

I have not been following SI very closely over the last month and a half are you still holding your shares of AMD or did you bail? It looks like AMD future is going to rely on how well it does in the conversion to 0.25 microns. If AMD can smoothly move to this process than the earning should follow. If they don't and yeild problems continue then AMD will remain just another minor player in the CPU market. What is your take on AMD's yield problem. From what I have heard and read it sounds like it may be a combination of density defects and a survival yield problem. My reasoning is AMD was reported back in July to be producing 150000 units/week but only managed to ship 1 million K6's in the entire quarter. However you also saw a shift in the speed curve favoring the lower speed bins. Let me know if my thinking is flawed but AMD Fab 25 is one 250,000 sq ft clean room.
With the addition of the large amounts of new equipment for the 0.25 ramp up it sounds like their clean room might not be to clean. Any time you add equipment to a sterile environment you add new contaminates until you can decontaminate this area. If these areas are near 0.35 production areas than you would have an increase in density defects. Coincendently AMD started the 0.25 ramp up in Fab 25 in the last week of July or the first week in August just about the time this yield problem must have started for it to have impacted the unit volume as much as it did.
Certianly the yields on K6-233 would also state that maybe they are having some survival yield problems as well.

Robert
