"no they don't city boy"

You really don't mind lying to make your point, do you? Your comment shows that you don't have the slightest understanding of the subject.

From my personal experience of family selling fores timber, I can tell you that under modern management models, all hardwoods and pine are cut and replaced with pine only. This is a general policy in all of La. and the the southeast.

Hardwoods are vital to the animal populations because they produce acorns, hickory nuts, wild pecans, wild blueberries, walnuts, beechnuts, etc. while pine produces only pine cones and pine seeds. Pine forest also destroy vine growth--muscadine, etc. The pine seeds are eaten by a variety of wildlife but cannot sustain turkey, deer, wild pigs, etc. etc. The animal population of this type of management of replacing all hardwoods with pines only does great damage to the animal population and to the whole eco system. Hardwood forests are damp and preserve large amounts of moisture under the canopy. Pine forests are very dry and create ideal situations for maverick and abnormal forest fires.

Ignorance and greed are the primary engines driving this managment model. There is simply more profit in planting pines only than in planting a mixture of hardwoods and pines. Pines can be harvested after only some 20 years of growth while hardwoods require some 50 years to produce same diameter of growth. The short term effects of pine reforestation are clearly understood. The long term effects are poorly understood and could produce dramatic negative climatic changes in the future.
