Year 2000 Legal Issues Summit and Vendor Exposition Wednesday - October 15, 1997 7:45 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Year 2000 could have an impact on virtually all computer systems, due to the use of two-digit dates in the hardware and software of mainframe, midrange and personal computer systems. However, this space-saving two-digit-year practice is embedded in the chips, as well as the software, that runs telephone systems, building fire and security systems, heating and cooling systems, and medical equipment.
This Summit is intended to address the legal issues associated with the Year 2000 problem. This program is open to the public and all levels of government. The primary focus is executives, administrators, facility managers, contracting officers, auditors, legal staff and the Information Resources Management community. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Embedded Systems and Infrastructure
The Y2K Risk to the Power Industry
Embedded Microprocessors and Computer Systems Play an Important role in all phases of the Power Industry. The Year 2000 risk includes the: Fuel Source, Oil and Gas Wells/Off-Shore Platforms; the Refining process, Pipeline distribution systems; Power plant control systems, to Electric power distribution systems. The Electric Power Industry has also been a leader in encouraging the use of environmental controls by end users. Smart Environmental control systems also have a Year 2000 risk.
This session will focus on the current status of Year 2000 planning by the Power Industry serving the Citizens of Texas and when they plan on being Year 2000 ready. Efforts to ensure fuel sources are reliable and Y2K ready, and how they plan on informing customers about the potential problem with smart environmental control systems.
If all sources have not developed plans to become Y2K ready, should regulatory agencies intervene and compel Y2K remediation?
What is the potential risk of industry deregulation having an adverse impact on becomingY2K Ready?
If the Power Industry or their suppliers have found problems with embedded systems, how can this information be shared? Smart flow control valves are common risks to the industry and its suppliers, but could also be used in city water/waste water plants.

First is a call to arms, that describes the nature of these beasts in all of their grotesqueness. Not just the usual tip-of-the-iceberg discussion of "arsenic and old code" but also details about DRAGONs on the desktop and in the equipment that controls most of the machines around us.
Answers to the question: How do you solve it? Details of the tools and techniques used by DRAGONslayers. How precisely are DRAGONs slain? Whose help is needed and what kinds of assistance do they provide?
Supporting materials and evidence about the size of the year 2000 problem by enterprise, by economic sector and industry, by city, by country, and on a worldwide basis.
