The Gartner Group, a reputable research organization, said that the Y2K problem was estimated at $600B. Are you saying that these guys have no supporting evidence? Hmmm... now that would be a scandal!

I'd be careful defending an arguement based on the (supposed) thoroughness & scientific method of Gartner Group's guesstimates.

Yes their US$300B to US$600B guesstimate is widely quoted... but then so is "Bank's won't be able to issue mortgages."

Much of what Gartner publishes is gibberish. Don't get me wrong they do lots of very valuable work, but they can be way off the mark in comparing tools. For instance: the inventory/assessment tool I used to market was compared on the same chart as Alydaar & MicroFocus. This is like comparing bulldozers & garden trowels because they both move dirt.

Just in case you didn't know, Gartner NEVER actually drives the tools they "review."
