Jeff, Bre-X has (had) a big building in downtown Calgary, with big gold Bre-X letters on the side.

Remember them? The chief geologist: "30 million ounces, plus, plus, plus." Then: 70 million ounces. And finally, 200 million ounces.

Sounds familiar. And a lot of banks, pension funds , mutual funds, and even large public institutions like universities, municipalities, hospitals, etc. were heavily invested in this obviously reputable large-cap venture.

The research reports on Bre-X were not written by scam artists. But regardless of the origins of the scam, and the answer to the question of who scammed who, in the end thousands of investors were fleeced, and yes, the whole thing was built on a lie.
