Actually it was in 1958 when he ran for governor. The guy that won was a KKK member and Wallace never liked the KKK. After he lost he announced he was a segregationist and won in 1962.

You are correct that he later teputiated the segregationist stance.

The ironic thing is that black and white, to this day, get along the best in the south.

Blue states like Mass. are the worst.
