If Coulter made anti-American comments like Chomsky etal have she wouldn't be popular on the right.

The content of her comments or Chomsky's isn't the point. It's the style.

The wild-eyed advocates on the left and right love their wild-eyed characters who are up front poking at the opposition. Rosie and Coulter have that in common, two sides of the same coin. I'm sure that if Coulter started criticizing tax cuts, she wouldn't be popular on the right and if Rosie started advocating for them, she wouldn't be popular on the left. Each side has its sacred cows. Flag waving belongs to the right. It isn't even on the radar of the left. I would bet that it would never occur to Chomsky or Rosie to worry about whether they're being patriotic enough just like it would never occur to Coulter to worry about whether she's being sensitive enough to gays. Off the radar.
