John, thanks for the additional explanation! I think I got it. I was switched around in my dr/cr thinking when it came to the SHE accounts: revenues & expenses.

Thanks for clarifying.

Bottom line is that the booking of additional reserves to "deferred stripping" reduces the expenses for the quarter. IMHO these expenses should have been charged to the P&L under the "matching principle" of accounting, regardless of yellow or purple balloons...

But again, as I have well demonstrated here, I'm no accountant.
