I suspect that patriotism is simply assumed and there is just no perceived need to actively display it. Loving one's country is the default. After all, how could one not love one's country?

That is kinda funny. But naive.

When San Francisco supervisors team up with antiwar groups to try to ban the US Navy's Blue Angels team from flying over the city and when they banned the permanent docking of a WWII battleship (USS Iowa) as a museum, it doesn't have anything to do with a lack of patriotism or love of country ..... Sure, they love their country .... in a pig's eye, they do.

As Supervisor Chris Daly so forthrightly put it, "I am sad to say I am not proud of the history of the United States of America since the 1940s."
