Rather than provide a full explanation, followed by your complaints of hair aches, I'll try to take you through this a small step at a time.

The prairie dogs who live around me have fleas. These fleas are carriers of the bacterium that causes bubonic plague. Normally the fleas are sparse enough that their effects aren't noticeable. When the prairie dogs become over populated the fleas also become overly abundant. The level of bacterium consequently is so high that the prairie dogs begin to die off from sickness. The weaker die and the stronger more resilient animals survive resulting in a much healthier colony than would have been expected without them going through the adaptive cycle.

This happens naturally every few years. If it didn't, the prairie dogs would become extremely over populated. The results would be devastation to the prairie biome, leaving an eroded and desolate desert region to replace the lush grass lands in a few years. The the ripple effect would destroy what we know as the bread basket of America, which also exports grain to poverty stricken countries. Our economy would collapse and many who depend on us would be without needed support.

"A plague is evil....

Are you sure about that?
